Overview:
SEED and Finishing Touches awards are designed to help students test and deepen ideas experientially with an attention to the creative process. These awards support materials or exposure that a student needs to develop their ideas (eg: canvases, hard drives, travel to a site, admission tickets to a performance or exhibition, hourly space rental, technical support, documentation, framing).
This support (up to $500) helps provide students with resources to:
• encounter work in the field that will directly impact a proposed project
• explore and test a new idea
• put the finishing touches on an existing project
Note: Students requesting technical equipment or non-consumable goods should fill out the Equipment and Technology Request Form.
Overview:
This program gives students access to equipment or technology that they need to pursue their creative research. All equipment remains property of the College.
Eligibility:
Students are only eligible to apply for software for their personal computer in conjunction with a faculty-supported independent study or honors project.
Before submitting the request form, students should verify that the College does not already have the requested resource. Students should also check with Academic ITS and academic advisors in the arts about available departmental resources.

Creative workspaces:
The Major Project Award helps provide students with resources to execute a significant creative research project. Collaborative and multi-disciplinary projects are prioritized.
Major project funding is more substantial than SEED/Finishing Touches funding, and is tailored to support big ideas. In close consultation with one or more faculty advisors and/or Lyons Lab staff, students or teams of students will work to develop the scope, timeline, needs of each project. Different kinds of projects will require different resources. Lab staff is available to work with students on the development of their proposals.
Eligibility:
Students are eligible to apply for major project support if they meet any of the following criteria:
(1) At least one project leader has received a seed grant or creative coaching from the lab and successfully demonstrated both its impact and the student’s commitment to rigorous creative research in a written report.
(2) An arts major or minor working with a dedicated faculty advisor on a significant academic project.
Independent Study Credit:
In conjunction with Major Projects, students are eligible to apply for a Lyons Lab independent study (for academic credit). A student can receive a maximum of eight Lyons Arts Lab credits during their Colby career.
Overview:
Each summer, the Lyons Arts Lab provides support to a select number of students pursuing credit-bearing courses in the arts. The lab does not provide stipends or honoraria, but it can support expenses, registration, tuition, and supply fees. Financial need is considered in this award process.
Eligibility:
If you are applying for support for a field of study that is not your academic major, you will need discipline specific faculty support prior to submitting this application.
